Sung Sot Cave

Sung Sot (Surprise) Cave is located on Bo Hon Island, some 10 kms from the Bai Chay Tourist Wharf. The Cave is one of the most beautiful and widest caves in Hạ Long Bay with the highest number of stalagmites and stalactites of unique shapes. Sung Sot Cave is one of the typical caves with high scientific value, which was discovered by the French archeologist in 1901. It was called then “Grotte des surprises”. Thank to its grandiose beauty, in early 2012, Sung Sot Cave was voted one of the top 10 beautiful caves in the world by the association of tourist offices and agencies in the Czech Republic.

From the boat, tourists will climb up 50 steep stone steps and then down about twenty stone steps to reach the entrance of the cave with a height of about 25 m. The cave has an area of 10,000 square meters with thousands of stalagmites, stalactites and a stone-paved passage system along 500 m from the entrance to the exit. The way to Sung Sot cave is quite steep through transplanted stone steps, which brings tourists not only an interesting feeling of trekking but also an eager feeling of a way to reach the haven.

The cave is divided into two main parts.  The first one seems to be a large theater with a ceiling covered with a layer of shimmering valet-rug, numerous sparkling chandeliers of stalactites, and stone statues of elephants, seals, raspberries, and flowers, which all together vibrate between real and dream lives. The ceiling is approximate 30 m high and the walls are almost perfectly smooth as if they were built by human beings and decorated by multi-colors that blend with the setting of the area. In the cave, there are a lot of strange images such as century-old tree with a lush foliage, fur seals and dinosaurs, etc. At the highest peak of the cave is a royal garden with charming scenery of clear water lakes and various plants and birds living here. On nice days groups of monkeys might go there for fruits and create agitation in the cave.

Passing through a narrow passage, tourists can reach the second part of the cave which is so immense that it can contain thousands of people at one time. Inside the cave, there are a lot of other interesting things. On the ceiling are numerous stalactites with odd forms. Nearby the entrance is a stone of a horse and a long sword forms related to an ancient legend telling that after conquering the An invaders from China, the hero Thanh Giong returned to the Haven leaving his horse and sword to reassure the public and expel demons. Currently, in the cave, many natural images seem to be the marks of fierce battle, the footmark of the horse became small beautiful lakes. Coming there, tourists can admire not only the beauty but also the impressiveness of nature. Each scene in the cave also gives tourists the feeling of novelty and surprise.

Sung Sot Cave is one of the highlights in any cruise routes in Halong Bay. Whether it is a day cruise, or 2 day one night cruise, most will stop at the Island for visitors to get stunned by the magnificence of the Cave.
